If you have been trying to get a credit card and have been having difficulty, it seems the best answer is to enroll in college. Colleges and universities across the country are continually plagues by credit card companies offering student credit cards. There are student visa cards as well as student discover cards. Nearly every major credit card imaginable is on offer to students regardless of their ability to pay.
Student credit cards can offer some advantages. Those who go on and finish college will soon have to worry about a credit history. Major purchases such as houses, cars and clothing will be on the cards. Most do not have the cash available for this so credit in needed. Student credit cards can help build that much needed credit rating that is vital for the future. Student credit cards are also plagued with many disadvantages. Only minor credit checks are ever performed for approval of these student credit cards. As long at they have a driver’s license and social security number they usually get approved. Students can apply and receive card after card. It isn’t uncommon for student to have accumulated 20-30 major credit cards during their time in college. Generally all maxed out to the limit. This can create a huge financial struggle before their lives even get going. College student credit cards are bad enough, but now many companies are trying credit cards for high school students. Some don’t even need a parent as a co signature. Many find this dangerous, as most high school students do not hold down jobs that pay well enough to pay back a major credit cards. High school students also lack the discipline needed to use credit wisely. Before getting a student credit card, it is wise to do some research. Make sure the initial interest rate promised is the one that will remain. Sometimes they offer special introductory rates and then increase them later. Also check around. With so many cards on offer, some deals are bound to be better than others. There is a great deal of competition for business. Student’s credit cards can help college students build a good credit rating and prepare for their future. They however, must be managed well or the opposite can occur. Make sure you read your credit agreement carefully including the small print. You don’t want a nasty surprise a few months down the line.
