Credit cards have completely changed the way that we shop. Where we once used actually money or checks, plastic has taken over. The average person carriers approximately 15-20 credit cards with them in their purse or wallet. However, once we swipe our cards and sign on the dotted line, our part of the purchasing process is done. Few of us give any though as to what really goes on when we use our credit or debit cards. We give very little through to the credit card readers.
Many of the machines that take credit cards use credit card reader USB software. This enables the machine to read the encoded information contained in the magnetic strip of your card. Once this is done your purchase is either approved or declined. Credit card readers reduce the risk to stores as well as consumers.
Some stores and retail outlets will use a secure digital credit card reader. This also reads the information on the card but keeps it secure so others cannot gain access to it. This insures that you information is safe and protects your from credit card fraud.
Before the invention of credit card readers and writers, we depended on carbon copies of are cards to be made. These took loads of time, were messy and were unsafe. Once discarded anyone could pick up the carbon copies and have access to all of your credit card numbers. Stores were also vulnerable to false sales. With the old carbon copies, the charge wasn’t authorized. The slips were just sent into the company and put onto the account several weeks later. There was no way for the merchant to know if the person was over their limit or not. Sometimes bogus cards were even used. Credit card readers put an end to all of that with advantages to both sides.
When we shop with our credit cards, most of us give little if any though to what happens when you swipe that piece of plastic. A highly advanced piece of equipment, known as a credit card reader checks the information that is placed within the magnetic strip on your card. This is what enables your card to purchase. This also protects you and the retail store from fraud. Credit card readers are rarely considered but highly important.
